Your Friends’ Facebook Apps and Data Mining

1055_540x517.gifIt’s not the applications you subscribe to, but the ones your friends subscribe to, that do most of the work of the data-mining agencies and companies associated with Facebook.Did you know every time one of your friends adds an application, all your profile information that is visible to your friend is also available to the application developer–even if you yourself have not installed the application and regardless of your own privacy settings for sharing your profile information. (eg. “Only my friends can see”) It is possible to configure the amount of your own private data that all the application-developers your friends have subscribed to can see. But it’s hidden away. If you haven’t clicked on the “other applications” tab in the “applications and ads” section in the privacy preferences area, then by default you have been sharing your entire profile with thousands of application developers for quite a while now.
