Chris Shamburg, Associate Professor of Educational Technology at NJCU and a high school English teacher for 18 years, gave an excellent presentation this morning at NECC 2008 on podcasting with students.

‘Podcourse’ is for a high school English course, and is an excellent resource for Podcasting and Creative Audio. It uses student-created audio projects to meaningfully engage students in new literacies associated with digital culture and the traditional literacies of writing, reading, and speaking.

Here are all the Handouts from the session. They include: worksheets, rubrics, audio drama assignments, resources for audio play, copyright and fair use rules for podcasting, as well as some ethical rules and practices for students to consider.
The excellent ‘copyright, digital media and teaching high school English’ chapter of his new book, English Language Arts Units for Grades 9-12, can be found here.

Free Podcast Hosting and RSS sites—Podomatic (www.podomatic.com), Blip.tv (www.blip.tv), Our Media (www.ourmedia.org). Chris has had the most success with Blip.tv

I think it’s really great that there are some institutions really embracing modern technology in this way. Sutdy materials have been available in this way for a while now in the States and it’s great that the UK is looking to catch up. University lectures are even about to be made available on Itunes in the UK. And to take it one step further, groups of students studying media and other related courses can even submit a podcast, for example, as part of their portfolio of work, which is a great step in the right direction.
